Good-To-Know: RFID – what is that anyway?

In this article, we have summarized everything you need to know about RFID.

What is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification and enables the contactless exchange of data by means of electromagnetic radio waves. An RFID system consists of a reader (RFID reader), an RFID transponder (tag) and an antenna. The RFID transponder is the heart of the system and consists of a microchip and an antenna. There are two main types of RFID transponders: active and passive.

Active vs. passive RFID transponders

Active transponders have their own energy source and can transmit data over long distances. Passive transponders draw their energy from the reader. There are different categories of passive transponders, including read-only, write-once, read many (WORM) and read and write.

What RFID frequencies are available?

RFID systems can operate in different frequency ranges: Low Frequency (LF), High Frequency (HF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF). Each frequency range has different properties and areas of application.

Advantages of RFID

RFID offers a number of advantages, including unique identification, flexible data management, insensitivity to contamination and the ability to capture multiple transponders simultaneously.

The future of RFID is promising and will continue to optimize our processes in various areas such as logistics, production and security.
